Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is celebrating African-American History Month 2017 with a number of events and activities at branches throughout the system. These include film, author events, storytelling and more. There are events for kids, teens and adults. See them all here. Some require pre-registration, so make sure to follow all links.

Hipstory

ImaginOn
Join us for HIPSTORY to enjoy live performances and visit exhibitor stands that celebrate African-American culture and history. The exhibitor area (in the Park Family Story Lab area) will be open to the public. Please sign up online if you’d like to attend the theater performances. A family-friendly event for teens (12-18), preteens (10-11), and families.
A Sign of the Times

Come celebrate African American History Month with music from A Sign of the Times.
Rookie Science: Garret Morgan’s Traffic Signal
Monday, February 20th, 1:30 p.m.
Myers Park Library
Celebrate Black History Month by attending this month’s Rookie Science program which will focus on the work of African American scientist Garrett Morgan, inventor of a better and safer version of the traffic signal. Children ages 6 to 11 who attend this program will learn about Morgan, play a fun movement game, and create a snack inspired by Morgan’s traffic signal. Each attendee will also receive a prize at the end of the program to take home.
Bantu Culture of Africa
Thursday, February 23rd, 6 p.m.
Matthews Library
This special Black History Month lecture will address the myths and truths about the Bantu people, their beliefs and worldviews. It will include the origin of the term Bantu, a brief history of Bantustans in South, West and Central Africa and how they migrated to their present locations. It will also provide a physical description of Bantustans, characteristics of all Bantu languages, their customs and beliefs, particularly their attachment to the Spirit World.
