Information about the performers
James “Tootie” Hogan is a professional jazz and R&B Guitarist. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut but at a very young age moved south with his family to Mount Holly, North Carolina. Hogan’s talents found a spotlight as a lead guitarist, a position that would prove to shape the solid musical foundation of his career. During the 70’s and early 80’s Hogan performed and traveled extensively with various well-known national musicians, such as: The Drifters, The Tams, the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose, The Chairmen of the Board (featuring General Norman Johnson), Junior Walker & the All-Stars, Hank Crawford, Eddie Floyd and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.
The Booker Wilson Band is the duo group of Tremayne Booker and Julian Wilson. The two musicians have played before in other ensembles and have now embarked on new musical territory working their way through jazz standards, Latin styles, the blues, soul music and some modern jazz. Julian is a music educator in North Carolina and Tremayne is originally from Chicago where he began his musical & educational journey, which has brought him to North Carolina.
The York Chester Middle School Jazz Messengers is a talented group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade musicians. Jazz Collective’s leader, Julian Wilson, was named 2013 Gaston County Teacher of the Year and 2013-2014 North Carolina SW Regional Teacher of the Year.
The Jazz Messengers perform several times throughout the year (WCNC Charlotte Today, 2016 Gastonia Jazz Fest) and we are honored to showcase their talents at Jazz Art Crawl on Nellie’s Southern Kitchen stage from 12:00-1:00. Be sure to join us on Saturday, May 6 for lunch and jazz at Nellie’s.
