Are you new to boating? Learn the basics of boating for FREE with Boatsetter Academy. This is a 2-hour, hands-on, on-water experience. The class is offered in 16 areas across the country. In the Charlotte area it takes place on Lake Wylie, at Buster Boyd Public Marina, 310 Blucher Circle, Lake Wylie, SC.
This class is free and you don’t need a boater’s license to take the class. It’s taught by a United States Coast Guard Certified Captain.
Participants need to be at least 18 years old, sign a waiver and sign up for an account with Boatsetter, which is a boat-sharing program (think airbnb for boats.)

If you’re new to boating, or if it’s been a while, this class would be helpful to you before renting a boat. Here are a number of ways to rent a boat in Charlotte.

- Maintaining Speed and heading
- Basic nautical terminology
- Stopping the boat
- Doing a pivot turn
- Interacting with other boats
- Interacting with waves
- Basic signage
