Have you ever dreamed of visiting a secret garden? Serenity Garden is a true hidden gem in South Charlotte. It’s a woodland oasis at the Reames Estate, featuring plantings, meandering paths, running water, waterfalls, sculptures, and more.
There are many spots with seating, where you can admire the view, meditate or just relax.
It’s free to visit, but it’s on private grounds, at the edge of a neighborhood, so please treat every single inch of this paradise with extreme care, and also be mindful of neighbors. Park on the street, but don’t block any driveways or walk on any other property.
The garden is open to visitors on Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. At this time, individuals and small groups don’t need to make an appointment to visit, but please make sure to check the Serenity Garden website for any changes.
To find Serenity Garden, navigate to 3200 Johnny Cake Lane Charlotte, North Carolina. There’s no sign for the garden. The entrance is at the end of the cul-de-sac. Look for this:
Patsy Reames, and her late husband, Patrick Reames, developed this garden on their hilly 4-acre lot. Their house is perched on the top, with a view past waterfalls, down to the gardens.
Paths meander throughout, and visitors should take their time. There’s so much to see that it’s a given you will miss something, which just means that you’ll need to return.
Look for a labyrinth, a giant swing, the “butterfly girl” statue among the flowers that butterflies love, the Fledgling sculpture, a little laughing Buddha statue and so much more.

One of the recent additions to Serenity Garden is a huge flagstone sculpture called “The Bee Hive, which was inspired sculptor and photographer Andy Goldsworthy, and created by MAC Landscaping.
After visiting Serenity Garden, consider visiting Maple Walk Garden. It’s another privately owned garden that’s free to visit. It’s just a few minutes away.
