On Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Davis General Store is holding Customer Appreciation Day. Wolfie’s BBQ and Yah’s Best will be on site with their products.
This will be around the first anniversary of the passing of Silas Davis, and his family members who run the store now wanted to mark this occasion. They’ll be raffling off a gift bag of some of Silas’ favorite things.
Check back soon for more information about the event.

In a city where the past sometimes seems to vanish into thin air, Davis General Store has staying power.
Its two-story brick building at 8940 Old Statesville Road, Charlotte, North Carolina, has been home to the business since 1908. S. W. Davis and his brother C. S. Davis started the mercantile in 1890, in the family home across the street.
In the beginning, it served the farming community of Croft, a small settlement along the railroad, between Charlotte and Huntersville. Farmers would load large bags of sugar, flour and fertilizer directly from the boxcar onto their wagons, while their wives and children would shop in the store for a wide array of goods.
The business has stayed in the family since 1890, and was run by Silas Davis, the grandson of S. W. Davis, and the great nephew of C. S. Davis, until Silas passed away in June of 2023.
Silas remembered, as a boy, being sent to the store for mayonnaise or bread. He’d ride his bike right into the store. Today his grandson helps out at the store.
The general store has weathered two world wars, two pandemics, and the Great Depression. When you step inside, you might think you actually stepped back into a different time — or several different times. A 1922 cash register still operates. An early fire extinguisher hangs on the wall. An old gas pump is on the porch.
The store might look familiar even if you never visited. Cinemax filmed scenes for the series Banshee there.
The store still serves farmers. While I was there, a customer came in for feed, saying, “I’ve got some hungry cows.”
You can buy overalls, gardening tools, seeds, and plants.
But you can also buy pretty much anything else, including cookware, candy, soap, local honey and preserves, socks, Moon Pies, pocket knives, tools, and, well, a lot more.
