Learn about “El Dia De Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) at this free workshop on Saturday, October 21st, 2017.
It starts at the Harvey Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture from 11:00am – 1:00pm and will move to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art from 1:00pm – 3:30pm. It’ll be a pre-event to the Day of the Dead Festival on October 29th at The Shoppes at University Place.
After a brief history of the holiday, participants will begin the hands-on crafting portion of the workshop. As is traditional for the Day of the Dead, in honor of those who passed away, tombstones and relics are dedicated to their memory and as a form of celebration.
The focus of the workshop is to craft tombstones and paper masks for the upcoming festival that participants can take home.
For the workshop, families have the option of bringing a picture of a loved one or an idol who has passed away. Families may also bring their own cereal or shoe boxes for the activity. Other craft-making activities will also be available.
