Two other drive-ins announced permanent closures in 2022 and 2023.
In February, 2023, Hound’s Drive-In, in Kings Mountain, which enjoyed great success during the pandemic, announced that it was permanently closing. In the announcement, the owner said that he wanted to spend more time with his young son. He also cited the denial by Cleveland County Commissioners to approve a necessary zoning change. The zoning change referred to was for a potential new site for the drive-in. According to Spectrum News, Brown sold the current site to Albemarle Corporation, a lithium provider, for $40 million.
Sunset Drive-In, in Shelby, which didn’t operate in 2021, announced on Facebook in early March that it’s closing due to the retirement of the person running it. The announcement included an email address, stinnett_drivein1949@yahoo.com, for anyone interested in the business.
