Upcoming Exhibition
In Transition by J. Stacy Utley

As a kid, I struggled drawing the human form. They were never perfect, and it was something I would often shy away from. As an architecture major, like so many other design students, I began sketching these human figures. The function of these figures was to provide scale, express activity and provide a narrative of how a designed space would be utilized. It was a catalyst for storytelling in expressing the ideas and concepts for architecture. As designers these figures are tools to give perspective; be it 1pt, 2pt or 3pt. Oftentimes looking into a context, more so than from within it outwardly. I liked how these figures looked. Although they appeared ambiguous, in my mind I knew their identity. As an artist, I began studying the impact of gentrification in communities and urban spaces. As I explored how I would convey this artistically, I would subconsciously use these figures in my conceptual sketches and ideas. Even though they were used in the exploration of my work, those figures were present but never in the executed work. It wasn’t until I was reminded that those figures carry an identity. While the context around them changed, it was those figures, those identities that were impacted and often lost. This body of work is shifting to the perspective of those figures and identities.
