Levine Museum of the New South, at 200 East 7th Street, will host a screening of the film “Freedom Summer”, followed by a discussion of the film. This free event takes place Thursday, November 6th, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. Here’s some information about the event: A film screening and discussion about the events on 1964 and their legacy today. Directed by National Humanities Medalist Stanley Nelson and supported by the NEH, Freedom Summer explores the ten weeks 50 years ago when more than 700 student volunteers from around the country joined organizers and local African American for a massive voter registration effort in Mississippi. The events of 1964 forced the country to take notice of the shocking violence and injustice taking place in the Deep South.
