Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, at Levine Center for the Arts, 420 S. Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Firebird’s arrival, as well as the birthday of its creator, Niki de Saint Phalle.
The Firebird sculpture might be the most photographed piece of art in Charlotte. If you are in the vicinity, whether to visit a museum or to attend a festival, if you don’t take a picture with the Firebird, have you really been here? The allure of the Firebird is that it seems to change every time you look at it, depending on the light and reflections. It has no bad sides!
French-American sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle’s monumental Le Grand Oiseau de Feu Sur l’Arche (The Firebird) was installed in the Bechtler’s plaza in October of 2009, after touring Europe and the United States.
The Firebird by the numbers:
- Height: 17 feet tall
- Weight: 1,433 pounds
- Number of pieces of mirror mosaic: 7,500
The Firebird’s 15th Anniversary Party
On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 6 p.m., The Bechtler is hosting a 15th Anniversary Party for the Firebird, which locals sometimes refer to affectionately as “The Disco Chicken.” It’s geared toward Charlotte’s Next Generation of Creatives and Young Professionals. This is not a formal group, but, rather, reflects the demographic of the emerging creative community in Charlotte.
If you’d like to be a part of this dynamic community, please come to this event. RSVP here.
The event will feature free admission to the museum, a cash bar and a DJ.
