Bechtler Museum of Art, 420 South Tryon Street, is presenting University Free Day on Friday, September 9th. College students and faculty get free admission all day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Just bring your college ID.
Students and faculty should take advantage of the opportunity to immerse themselves in Charlotte’s unique collection of mid-century modern art. This will be one of the last opportunities to see The House That Modernism Built in the fourth-floor gallery, and the second-floor exhibition All That Sparkles… 20th Century Artists’ Jewelry, “breaks boundaries” according to The Charlotte Post.

In addition, there will be a panel discussion, The Importance of Modernism to Our Region: Then and Now, moderated by Bechtler curator Dr. Jennifer Sudul Edwards, in the Wells Fargo Auditorium at Knight Theater (430 S. Tryon Street) from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.
PANELISTS
Malcolm E. Davis, AIA: Principal at Bergmann Associates (the Rochester, NY based architecture/engineering firm that was joined by Gantt Hubermann Architects in 2012) who has served as a Board Member for AIA Charlotte and is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Andreas H. Bechtler Arts Foundation.
Loyd Dillon: Acclaimed Charlotte designer and interior design instructor at Central Piedmont Community College.
Murray Whisnant: Architect, designer, inventor, furniture maker and artist. Whisnant was voted one of the top 50 architects in America by Town and Country Magazine.
MODERATOR
Dr. Jennifer Sudul Edwards is the curator at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. She holds a Ph.D. from the Instituite of Fine Arts, New York University and previously worked for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. Dr. Sudul Edwards joined the Bechtler in 2015.
