Discovery Place is hosting a series of free events for National Week of Making (Friday, June 17 – Thursday, June 23). The National Week of Making is a White House initiative that creates the opportunity for individuals in communities throughout the U.S. to participate in Making activities locally, celebrating the innovation, ingenuity and creativity of Makers.
The Maker Movement is a DIY initiative that celebrates tinkering, innovation, creativity and invention. For the Week of Making, we are celebrating with an entire week of FREE community Make offerings that everyone can enjoy. All activities will take in our Windows on Tryon workshop space and do not require Museum admission:
Quilling 101 – Friday, June 17, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., FREE!
Explore the art form of paper quilling, a technique that has been used for hundreds of years to create art out of paper scrolling mosaics. Learn how to twist and twirl paper to create your own beautiful design while learning about this ancient art form.
Sticks and Bands: Basic Geometrical Fun – Saturday, June 18, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., FREE!
Using two simple building materials—dowel rods and rubber bands—engineer your very own architectural designs! With just a few twists and turns, you can design and build fantastic shapes in no time.
DIY Catapults – Sunday, June 19, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., FREE!
Make your very own mini catapults! Learn about the scientific principles of kinetic and potential energy as you test out your catapult design. Then take aim and put your skills to the test in a game of catapult cornhole.
Air Rockets – Monday, June 20, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., FREE!
This is rocket science! Learn how to build your very own compressed air rocket. Then design and test fire your very own paper-air rocket to try and hit the targets.
Air Men & Monsters – Tuesday, June 21, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., FREE!
Let your imagination soar skyward as you create your own version of the air dancers. Then explore how Makers like Joshua Allen Harris are using subway power to create air-inspired street art.
Makey Makey Madness – Wednesday, June 22, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., FREE!
Can you play Pac Man with Play-Doh? How about play a piano made from fruits and veggies? These are just two of the projects you can try with the circuit board called a Makey Makey. Explore electronics principles with hands-on experience with conductors and insulators.
