Mecklenburg Historical Association Docents are presenting a free program, “Towards an Integrated Interpretation of the Enslaved at Rosedale Plantation,” at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 101 West Sugar Creek Road on Tuesday, October 6th, 2015, at 11 a.m.
Uncomfortable feelings, lack of primary source material, and difficulties with supporters are all challenges faced by the staff of historic plantation sites as they wrestle with how to interpret the enslaved to the public. Beth Harris, former curator of education at Historic Rosedale, will present her reflections and research regarding the enslaved of Rosedale. From an initial embarrassing moment in her early days at Rosedale to new discoveries and interpretation in 2013, Beth will share her journey to more fully understand an often-invisible history as she and volunteer Linda Vista tracked down previously unexamined records, visited gravesites, read background material, and looked at over 300 Mecklenburg County slave deeds. Beth has also traced the descendants of some of Rosedale’s slaves into modern times. Don’t miss this fascinating subject!
Refreshments are available at 9:30 a.m. The business meeting will follow at 10:00, with the program beginning at 11:00.
