James Crawford, Professor of History at UNC-Charlotte, will discuss the role of education in the life of First Lady Sarah Childress Polk. Childress’ experiences attending private academies made her exceptionally well-educated for a 19th-century woman. Additionally, these experiences shaped her role as a poised and humble First Lady who was incredibly active with her husband’s work.
Overall, this lecture will illuminate Sarah Childress Polk’s roles as First Lady, patron of the arts, and one of the most successful graduates of North Carolina’s Salem Academy.
