On the night of Sunday, September 27th, there will be a total lunar eclipse, as well as a Supermoon, during which the moon will look red in color. Join Discovery Place educators and members of the Charlotte Amateur Astronomy Club for a Lunar Eclipse and Star Party on the south end of Level 3 of the Discovery Place parking deck. This is a free event and telescopes will be provided. Park for free on Level 2 of the parking deck. The event starts at 8:30 p.m. and the lunar eclipse will begin around 10:20 p.m. The event will be cancelled if it rains or if it’s too cloudy to see.
A lunar eclipse is when the moon enters the earth’s shadow. The Supermoon effect happens when the moon is in its closest point in its orbit around the earth. It appears larger and brighter than usual. The moon will also look red in color. The “Blood Moon” effect is caused by light refracting through Earth’s atmosphere from sunsets and sunrises.
