The Mecklenburg Historical Association Docents invite visitors who are interested in learning about and sharing history to attend their free program on Tuesday, December 1st, in the Fellowship Hall of Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church.
A brief business meeting takes place at 9:45 AM, with the program beginning at 10:00 AM. A Christmas tea follows The History of Carols.
Music is an important part of celebrating Christmas today as well as in the past. Christmas carols, both religious and secular, were sung and played by the early settlers here in the backcountry. Our ancestors brought their Christmas carols and traditions with them when they came to America. Once here, they sometimes created new ones and occasionally adopted those of their neighbors. Listen to The Limbertwigs as they play some favorite Christmas carols and tell the history of those songs. Which carols could have been sung and played in 18th century Charlottetown? Which originated or were rediscovered in the 19th century? The Limbertwigs (Janet Dyer, Beth Caveny and Lynn Eskridge) are musicians who enjoy playing music from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Now Christmas comes, ‘tis fit that we
Should feast and sing, and merry be;
Keep open house, let fiddlers play.
A fig for cold, sing care away
And may they who whereat repine
On brown bread and on small beer dine.
