The City of Charlotte, GÖKOTTA, and Potions & Pixels are offering a FREE summer camp for middle school and high school students who live in the West End and North End areas.
Charlotte AR Experience: Using Augmented Reality to Change Our Reality will give students a chance to play, learn, and create in Augmented Reality.
Participants will learn about cutting-edge careers, explore technologies through hands-on activities, and be joined by special guests and mentors.
The camp meets in a different location in Uptown Charlotte each day, from June 21st to 25th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Transportation assistance is available upon request.
Students get a free lunch every day.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to join the group for certain portions of the camp, such as the final presentations and the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit.

Introduce participants to augmented reality by exploring current AR apps and games. The purpose of the session is to get youth excited about the possibilities around AR and is focused on having fun. Guest speakers who use AR/VR/MR in their careers will join.
DAY TWO (JUNE 22, 2021) – URBAN ARBORETUM TRAIL EXPLORATION

DAY THREE (JUNE 23, 2021) – CONNECTING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Location: Discovery Place Museum and South End
Interactive teaching with an existing AR tool. Students visit the current Artifical Intelligence exhibit at Discovery Place to learn about the connection between AR and AI. AI features ways that our brains and computers interact with the world. How does this impact the design and use of Augmented Reality? Demonstrate
these connections through the use of existing AR technology to their surrounding area.
DAY FOUR (JUNE 24, 2021) – THE NEXT GREAT AR PROGRAM
Location: Camp North End Van Gogh Exhibit and The Nest
Brainstorm how to further use Augmented Reality in the Urban Arboretum Trail to engage the broader public. Pull from experiences and learnings from Day 1-3 to create an idea for an AR tool that would encourage individuals of all ages to explore the Urban Arboretum Trail. Three preset themes will be assigned for exploration based on the first three days. (i.e. Environment, History, Architecture)
SESSION FIVE (JUNE 25, 2021) – BEHIND THE SCENES OF AR
Location: Uptown
Understand what developers need in order to create different types of augmented reality apps. Relate this to the Urban Arboretum Trail (UAT) app development by discussing different types of experiences or stories to tell with an UAT app. Identify possible data collection and choose which ones will be focused on. By the end of the session, the group will have identified the type of content for which the future app will be built.
