Here’s a great free opportunity for those in wheelchairs to learn the sport of curling for free at Charlotte Curling. Note that you need to sign up in advance. See below for details.
The Charlotte Curling Association, along with USA Curling and Carolinas HealthCare System’s Adaptive Sports & Adventures Program, will host a free wheelchair clinic on Saturday, November 14. The three-hour clinic will take place from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm at 6525 Old Statesville Road in north Charlotte.
This free clinic is open to wheelchair users and anyone with a mobility impairment. To register, please contact the Adaptive Sports & Adventures Program (ASAP) at 704-355-1062 or asap@carolinashealthcare.org.
Marc DePerno and Tony Colacchio from the 2016 U.S. National Wheelchair Curling Team will serve as instructors during this informative and interactive event. Topics include sport-specific terminology, equipment, rules, classification criteria, delivery techniques (how to throw a stone) and strategy.
Marc DePerno, National Director of Outreach and Development for USA Wheelchair Curling since 2007, is also the Director of STARS (Success Through Adaptive Recreation and Sports) at Sitrin Medical Rehabilitation Center in New Hartford, New York and works in collaboration with the Utica (N.Y.)
