Live music is evolving during our current challenge, and musical artists, from the biggest to the smallest, are revamping the way they offer performances, and how they further their career.
Since March we’ve been seeing a plethora of virtual concerts — concerts that you can watch on your computer or mobile device, or maybe your TV. Musicians are, in most cases, playing for tips, which viewers contribute using venmo, paypal, or cash app.
A second trend that’s we’re just seeing the start of, is drive-in concerts. A band plays from a safe distance while the audience watches from their cars. These are taking places in drive-in theaters, but not only in drive-in theaters. We’ve started to see them in other locations around town too, and we expect to see more.
Here’s a list of upcoming music events in Charlotte, mostly virtual.
Enter Garth Brooks. On June 27th, at 8:30 p.m., he’s combining the two, with a one-night only “Drive-in concert experience” in which the audience watches from their cars, in drive-in theaters across the country, as he performs live from Nashville.
So, it’s a virtual concert, but you don’t watch from home.
The cost is $100 a car. Obviously, this is more expensive than most items we include on Charlotte on the Cheap.
That seems a lot to watch him perform on a movie screen, but for big Garth Brooks fans, especially whole families of fans who can share a car, it will probably be worth it. Tickets, which go on sale Friday, June 19th, at 12 p.m., are expected to sell out very quickly.
The sound will be broadcast through FM radio, so the sound quality of the concert will depend on the quality of your radio. It’s suggested that you bring a battery-powered radio so that you don’t run down your car’s battery.
Here in the Charlotte region, two drive-in theaters are participating:
- Hound’s Drive In, 11 Raven Circle, Kings Mountain. Buy tickets.
- Badin Road Drive-In, 2411 Badin Road, Albemarle. Buy tickets.
You can find more locations across the country for Garth Brooks’ Drive-In Concert here.
