Kannapolis’ Historic Gem Theatre Reopens After Renovation

The historic Gem Theatre reopens to the public on Thursday, May 16, 2024, after extensive renovations. The 88-year old Gem Theatre is one of the oldest single screen movie theaters in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Gem Theatre is at 111 Laureate Way, Kannapolis, North Carolina. While you’re there, explore the rest of Kannapolis’ beautiful, revitalized downtown.

The renovations began in December, 2023, and include:

New seats
Refurbishing of the original seats in the balcony
Refinishing the stage and floors
New screen
New curtains
New projector
Repair of original plaster work
Restoration and updating of lobby, restrooms and concession area
The addition of historical artifacts

Gem Theatre offers an affordable entertainment experience. Adult tickets are just $5. Seniors, children and matinee tickets are $4. The opening night movie will be IF, starring Ryan Reynolds.
