The Gold Mine Barbecue Festival takes place at Reed Gold Mine, 9621 Reed Mine Road, Midland, on Saturday, April 13th, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission to the festival is FREE, and so are:
- The gold mine history museum
- Walking trails
- Underground tours of the mine,
- Tours of stamp mill
The Gold Mine Barbecue Festival is a celebration of the history of barbecue in North Carolina. A travelling exhibit will be on site discussing the history of this important food to the local culture. In addition to the exhibit, 5 local barbecue restaurants will be on site demonstrating their barbecue techniques and providing additional educational experiences.
Pittmaster Matt Barry from Midwood Smokehouse will be giving a demonstration and a talk about Eastern vs. Western Barbecue at noon.
The restaurants on site will be:

- Queen City Q
- The Smoke Pit
- Carolina Barbecue Company
- Johnny Rogers
If you want to eat any of the barbecue on site, it will be offered between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Presale tickets for food are $17 for adults and $10 for kids. Day-of tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for kids (12 and under).
With a ticket you can sample barbecue, a side, and a dessert from each of the five restaurants, and you’ll also get a soda, bottled war, or cup of sweet tea.
Want to pan for gold? Tickets for panning are $3 plus tax per person.
All proceeds from this event go to support Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site through their nonprofit support group the Reed Expansion Committee.
