Kenya Templeton is leading a free group bicycle ride through Charlotte history.
Although it’s free, donations are encouraged to cover the costs. You can make a donation when you RSVP or at the ride.
The Grier Heights Neighborhood History Bicycle Tour will take place Sunday, May 9th, 2021, at 5 p.m.
Uncover the first Charlotte suburb established by black landowners, and the history made since.
The group will begin to assemble at the Billingsville Elementary School, 124 Skyland Avenue, at 4:30 pm. Introductions, ride instructions, and an overview of the Grier Heights Neighborhood will begin at 5:00 pm. The group will roll to various sites throughout Grier Heights neighborhood. The ride will end at approximately 7:00 pm.
You are welcome to participate via bicycle, jogging, scooter, skateboard, or rollerblades. To be compliant with COVID-19 guidelines, all participants will be required to wear a face mask/covering. Please exercise social distancing during this event.
Participants are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet. Children 18 years old or under are required to wear a helmet as it is NC law. Registering for this event waives liability and responsibility for any injuries or damages incurred during this event from Kenya Templeton or The Velo Griot. Your registration for this event means that you accept responsibility for any injuries or damages to or by your bicycle, scooter, or skates during this event.
This bicycle ride is for all skill levels. The group will stop at numerous sites along the route, which will cross major streets in Uptown Charlotte. Children are welcome to attend if they can cycle in a straight line and comfortable crossing major city streets.
Please be sure to wear bright-colored clothing and have head/taillights on for best visibility. All children in attendance under 18 years of age must wear a helmet in accordance with N.C. law and adults are encouraged to do the same for their personal safety.
Please bring all items you will need for your personal comfort including a beverage, sunglasses, and cell phone. Be sure to conduct an A.B.C. check before attending the ride. This includes:
- Air in your tires
- Brakes ability to stop
- Chain is lubricated and operable
