Local historian Tom Hanchett is giving a free talk on Sunday, March 19th, at 11 a.m., and Wednesday, March 22nd, at 6:30 p.m., on How Charlotte Got Segregated. It will be held at Avondale Presbyterian Church, 2821 Park Road.
More information:
Segregation did not just happen, nor did it come into being quickly after the Civil War. Rather, it was the result of layers of specific decisions, public and private, from the 1890s into our own time. Understanding that history can help us create our own path going forward.
Dr. Hanchett is best known for his work with Levine Museum of the New South and for his UNC Charlotte Press history of Charlotte entitled Sorting Out the New South City. He’s also author of the Food at Home column in the Observer, exploring Charlotte’s international cultures.
