Mecklenburg County Government Holiday Hours
Mecklenburg County government info.
Mecklenburg County offices and services will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
This includes all units of:
- Department of Social Services (DSS): Child, Family, and Adult Services*
- Department of Community Resources (Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center and Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center)
- Public Health
- Elections Office
- Tax Office
- Register of Deeds Office
- Land Use and Environmental Services Agency Offices
Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Centers** – Closed
Park and Recreation:
- All Recreation and Senior Centers – Closed
- Indoor Aquatic Facilities – Closed
- Nature Centers – Closed
- Parks – Open
- Seasonal Pools, Spraygrounds and Beach – Closed for the season.

Closed on City-recognized holidays:

Solid Waste Services
City of Charlotte collects garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste on all holidays except for the ones listed below. During holiday weeks, all collection services operate on a one-day delay. Friday customers receive service on Saturday.
- Martin Luther King Jr. – Monday, Jan. 15: Friday collection on Jan. 20
- Juneteenth – Wednesday, June 19: Friday collection on June 22
- Thanksgiving – Thursday, Nov. 28: Friday collection on Nov.30
- Christmas – Wednesday, Dec. 25: Friday collection on Dec.28
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS)
Charlotte Area Transit System buses, LYNX trains and the CityLYNX streetcar will operate on a Sunday schedule on December 24 and 25, 2023. On Monday, January 1, 2024, they will operate on a Sunday schedule. On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, they’ll operate on a regular weekday schedule.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day the transportation typically runs on a Saturday schedule.

All branches are closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Check back for a full list of holiday closures in 2024. More info.

Hours of stores and malls are generally not affected by Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Malls
Northlake Mall:
- December 24: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- December 25: Closed
- December 26: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- December 31: 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- January 1: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Concord Mills:
- December 24: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- December 25: Closed
- December 31: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
SouthPark Mall:
- December 24: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- December 25: Closed
- December 31: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- January 1: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Stores
In general, grocery stores will close early on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day. If you need to buy food on Christmas Day, your best bet will be a convenience store or a drugstore. But there are a couple of exceptions! Most stores are open on New Year’s Day, but some with modified hours.
Store hours might vary by location, so if you want to be absolutely sure, call your local store.

The pharmacy will be closed on New Year’s Day.
ABC Stores
ABC Stores throughout the state are closed on the following days:

- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
However, counties might close the stores on other days as well. Mecklenburg County ABC stores are closed on MLK Day (January 15, 2024.)
