Levine Museum of the New South, 200 East 7th Street, will be holding programs to help understand and respond to this week’s events. Here’s all the information from the Levine Museum:
This week’s events have left our entire community reeling with pain, questions, and uncertainty. The need for empathy, understanding, and courage has perhaps never been greater.
Levine Museum of the New South believes in dialogue and in the power of remembering. Shared stories build community and bridge differences. Confronting the unvarnished truth of our past and our present can free us to change and to create a better future. Without acknowledging our history, we cannot move forward.
In the coming days and weeks, this community will need to reflect on how we got here and make decisions about how we move forward.
Levine Museum of the New South offers our support to all of our residents, as we work together to find avenues for reconciliation and solutions to address issues that too often divide us. Within our institution’s walls, we house stories of resilience, strength, challenges, and choices that offer context, inspiration, and hope. Our doors are open. All are welcome as we continue the critical conversations and seek perspective in our quest to build community and understanding.
The tragic events of the past two days are manifestations of conflicts that are deeply rooted in our history. Those conflicts do not disappear with the next news cycle, and over the coming weeks and months, Levine Museum of the New South will convene the community around dialogue and programs that help understand today in the context of the past and chart a course for the future.
That work begins this weekend, with two on-site programs and a series of virtual conversations.
On Saturday, September 24, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Come to Understand: Community Open House offers guided tours of our permanent exhibit Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers, space and activities for reflection, and a public exhibit-making workshop to document your story and perspective. Free admission between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, September 28, 6:30 – 8:30pm, the Museum hosts “How Could This Happen in Charlotte (again)?” — a town hall forum led by Staff Historian, Brenda Tindal, offering historical context, followed by Q&A and small-table discussion that will begin unpacking the issues that impact our city’s past, present, and future.
Museum staff will also engage our community through on-going virtual programs using Facebook (/LevineMuseum) and Twitter (@LevineMuseum), using #ComeToUnderstand.
