Gaston County Museum, 131 West Main Street in Dallas, in partnership with the Town of Dallas and Gaston County Travel and Tourism, is presenting Court Square Summer Concert Series. They’re presenting some interesting and diverse music. They’ve got a great lineup. These free concerts start at 6:30 p.m.
Friday, June 10th: Leyla McCalla
A former member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Leyla is a New York-born Haitian-American living in New Orleans, who sings in French, Haitian Creole and English, and plays cello, tenor banjo and guitar. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, her music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty � it vibrates with three centuries of history, yet also feels strikingly fresh, distinctive and contemporary.
Leyla’s debut album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes, was named 2013’s Album of the Year by the London Sunday Times and Songlines magazine, and received additional raves from a number of other publications, including the New York Times, Boston Globe and Offbeat, for its haunting mixture of music and message.
Friday, July 8th: David Holt & Josh Goforth
Four-time Grammy Award winner David Holt and rising acoustic music star and Grammy nominee, Josh Goforth join together to bring to life the joy and spirit of old time mountain music and stories.
Between them, they combine the virtuosic sounds of guitar, banjo, fiddle, slide guitar, mandolin, and a world of exciting rhythm instruments from hambone (body slapping) rhythms, to spoons, stump-fiddle, rhythm bones, jaw harp, and even paper bag. It is a program of songs, stories, and amazing musicianship that will appeal to all ages.
Friday, August 12th: Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen
For years, Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen sang in New Orleans six nights a week. She performed at a wide array of venues including the House of Blues, until Hurricane Katrina destroyed her home in 2005. She relocated to North Carolina and has recently started touring with the Music Maker Blues Revue.
