May 20th marks the 239th anniversary of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, which preceded the signing of the more famous Declaration by more than a year. Charlotte celebrates this date every year. It is the day of the year that you’re most likely to see horses and people in Colonial garb in Uptown Charlotte. (It’s mainly the people wearing the colonial garb, not the horses.) Here’s what’s going on Tuesday, May 20th, 2014.
Noon commemoration
At Trade and Tryon at 12 p.m., gather to hear historic readings, see colonial re-enactors, military parades, and musket and cannon firings. The celebration will continue at Old Settlers Cemetery, where Thomas Polk will be honored.
MeckDec Day at the Ballpark: May 20th marks the first annual MeckDec Day at BB&T Ballpark, where the Charlotte Knights will take on the Norfolk Tide. The May 20th Society film will be shown on the big screen, Thomas Polk will read the Mecklenburg Declaration, and muskets and the cannon will be fired. Finally Captain Jack will throw out the first pitch. Members of the May 20th Society will gather outside the ballpark and parade in together. If you wear colonial garb you can gather with them and get in for free. Please note that you will be part of the festivities, so you won’t blend in with the other baseball fans.
