Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation has several community gardens on county property. These gardens give residents the chance to grow plants even if they don’t have a suitable spot at their home for a garden.
The county doesn’t charge for plots, but some of the community gardens charge a small, voluntary fee that helps finance tools, wheelbarrows, hoses and more.
You can expect to spend about two hours a week on your plot, and you’re responsible for keeping the garden in good condition, including weed management.
Each community garden has a Garden Captain who will orient new gardeners and make sure that the plots are well cared for.
The county will provide water, compost and mulch.
There’s high demand for the plots, but on December 28, 2023, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation announced on Facebook that the following community gardens have plots available:
- 2901 Dunlavin Way
- Ezell Farm Park
- Eva B. Barber Park
- Little Sugar Creek Greenway (Alexander St)
- Merry Oaks Community Garden
- Smallwood/Biddleville Community Garden
- Winterfield Community Garden
If you’d like to put in an application for a plot in one of these gardens, you’ll find a form to request a plot, as well as all the rules and regulations, here.
You can also apply for a plot in one of the other community gardens, and you’ll be contacted when a plot becomes available.
