NEXWeek: 2019 Neighborhood Exchange takes place from April 23rd to April 30th, 2019. It’s a series of activities presented by the City of Charlotte that are designed to celebrate community work, teach you new skills, spark ideas from successful local projects, and more.

Neighborhood Leadership Awards Breakfast

This breakfast is for Charlotte neighborhood leaders to recognize excellence by their peers. This year, the awards feature some new categories, which include:
Lifetime Achievement Award: This award will honor an individual whose life and work (ideally, 20+ years of volunteer service) have benefited their neighborhood by creating inclusiveness, increasing the viability of community activities and organizations, and supporting the neighborhood and its leaders.
Neighborhood Organization of the Year: To be considered for this award, an organization must be registered with the City’s Neighborhood Organization Contact List and have completed several strong community building activities (April 2018 – March 2019).
Rookie of the Year: This award is for young leaders under 35 who are bringing passion, fierce commitment and new forms of organizing and activism to make Charlotte a better place for all.
Community Volunteer of the Year: This award celebrates an outstanding individual who transcended neighborhood boundaries and has made a difference benefitting and uplifting our city overall.
Community Service (Business): This award recognizes outstanding contributions by a private business or industry with an extraordinary commitment to community service that has helped improve the quality of life in local neighborhoods and across Charlotte.
Community Service (Nonprofit): This award recognizes outstanding contributions by a nonprofit organization with an extraordinary commitment to community service that has helped improve the quality of life in local neighborhoods and across Charlotte.
Please do not submit a person or organization for more than one award category. Neighborhood Leadership Award nominations are due by 5 p.m. on April 11.

Paint the Pavement Workshop with Jamil Steele, Visual Arts Teacher

Teacher Jamil Steele, his 5th grade students at Shamrock Elementary and leaders from the Country Club Heights neighborhood association, literally took art to the streets when they collaborated on a Paint the Pavement project. Join Jamil as he walks you through the creative process to help you design a project that can be a real placemaking opportunity for your community. Hear about the impact it made on the neighborhood – including slowing down traffic by the school – and learn about grants that may be available to help you turn a community street into a work of art.

Grow Food | Grow Community Workshop with Amanda Zullo, Founder and Executive Director of Pop Up Produce, and Demetria Cox, Founding Board Member and Horticulture Program Lead

Join Amanda Zullo and Demetria Cox as they demonstrate how you can develop a green thumb with Pop Up Produce’s Fresh Start Kits while helping youth in our local food deserts grow food, too. Hear about their work and impact in our local school system including how they raise awareness about food deserts in our community and how growing food is growing our community. As a Neighborhood Exchange participant, you will get to take home your very own Pop Up Produce Fresh Start Kit. Let’s get growing!

Placemaking Bus Tour

Creating a sense of place doesn’t require a large budget, just great amounts of enthusiasm and imagination! Get reinvigorated for your next neighborhood project by joining the Planning, Design, and Development staff for a Placemaking Tour of some of the most creative, quirky and inspiring spaces in Charlotte. Stops on the tour include a magic carpet, a growing village and a very large porch.
