The Charlotte Rail Trail, a 4.5 mile long walkway along the LYNX Blue Line, connects neighborhoods from Sedgefield, Southside Park, Brookhill, Dilworth, Wilmore, and South End to Uptown. Along the way, you’ll find cafés, bars, galleries and more.
The next step is adding public art, seating area and interactive elements to engage the community.
That’s where Rail Trail Symphony comes in.
Rail Trail Symphony includes colorful instruments (chimes and drums), seating options, and a small performance stage in a grassy area near the New Bern station along the LYNX Blue Line, next to the B-cycle station. The Symphony is intended to be a fun, playful project for people of all ages to interact with while they are waiting for the train or passing by on the Trail.
It was aided by a $20,000 grant from Charlotte Center City Partners won from KaBOOM! Play Everywhere Challenge.
The project was a collaboration between City of Charlotte, Historic South End, Playmore Design Corporation, DRUMSTRONG and ACSM in collaboration with C3 Lab, as well as Pacific Builders.
Students from the Advertising + Graphic Design Program at Central Piedmont Community College designed and painted a mural for the project. The mural – “Soundwave Art” – is a visual representation of the word KaBOOM!
Check out The Rail Trail Symphony at an interactive, family-friendly, grand opening on Tuesday, April 11th, 2017, from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
The event Starts at Fountains Southend, 126 New Bern Street, where Michael Smith, Vi Lyles and Aisha Alexander of KaBOOM! will make brief remarks.
Then, guests will grab instruments and Drumstrong will lead a musical parade to the Rail Trail Symphony. DrumStrong will lead an interactive drum circle at the site.
