At times, performances and attractions can be overwhelming for people with sensory sensitivities, including those with autism. Some movies theaters, museums and other venues are hosting sensory-friendly events so that everyone has a chance to be comfortable and be themselves.
During these events, typically, the lights will be up (if it’s a movie) and the sound will be quieter. Often a quiet space will be offered for those who need a break. Sometimes helpful items like noise-reducing headphones are available. At sensory-friendly performances, it’s expected that some people will move around and even make some noise.
We’re focusing on sensory-friendly events, but many venues offer “sensory bags” that can be checked out at any time. For example, The Mint Museum offers Sensory Friendly S.P.A.R.K. Explorer Packs, with headphones, weighted lap pads, fidget keychains and more. It’s worth checking the websites or calling to find out how the venues make visits more comfortable with people with sensory sensitivities.
We’ve put together a list of some of the upcoming sensory-friendly events, and we’ll be updating it all the time. If you know of events that should be added, please email info@charlotteonthecheap.com, and we’ll add the events, as time permits.
