Both Discovery Place Science and Discovery Place Kids are hosting viewing parties for the partial solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The museums will offer interactive activities on their parking decks.
During the solar eclipse, the last one viewable from the contiguous United States until August 23, 2044, the sun will be totally obscured in the path of totality and about 80% obscured in Charlotte, North Carolina. Learn about the solar eclipse in Charlotte.

Solar Eclipse Viewing Parties at Discovery Place Science
Beginning on April 1, 2024, Discovery Place Science will offer many hands-on STEM demonstrations and activities related to sun science. These include solar story times, eclipse design challenges and more. Learn about all the activities.
On April 8, 2024, there will be two eclipse viewing parties at Discovery Place Science.
Eclipse Live Stream
From 1:30 to 4:15 p.m. on April 8, 2024, Accenture IMAX Dome Theatre will be showing a live screen of the eclipse. This presentation is included in museum admission.
Outdoor Viewing Party
Outside Activities will take place on Level 3 of the Discovery Place parking deck from 2:30 to 4 p.m. These events are FREE and no museum admission is required.
However, the free eclipse glasses will be distributed inside, to ticketed guests, so if you’re coming just for the free outside activities, please bring your own eclipse glasses. Learn where to purchase eclipse glasses. (Also, Warby Parker will be giving away free solar eclipse glasses starting April 1, 2024.
One more option: Make a pinhole viewer for the solar eclipse. It’s easy and cheap!
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at Discovery Place Kids
Discovery Place Kids is closed on Mondays, but, in partnership with the Town of Huntersville, it’s hosting a special outdoor solar eclipse party on the parking deck on April 8, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
It’s free and for all ages. Free solar eclipse glasses will be distributed at 12 p.m., while supplies last.
Some of the activities:
- Painting with sunscreen
- Creating art with UV paper
- Making UV bracelets and more
