Sugar Creek Brewing, at 215 Southside Drive, is hosting a St. Sylvester’s Eve Party on December 31st, 2016, starting at 7 p.m. Read on to learn about this alternate way to celebrate New Year’s Eve. This is a free event.
In the spirit of celebrating the New Year with good friends and family, commemorating those who cannot be with us and good health that we are throwing our humble version of St. Sylvester’s Eve.
Our celebration is open to the public, no tickets or reservations needed. We will have our kitchen open and live music by Caleb Davis along with some VERY beer releases. We will be releasing a new Apricot Tripel at 9 pm and pulling two kegs of the infamous Sugar Creek XV out of our cellar to be tapped at midnight.
In Belgium, New Year’s Eve is called Sint Sylvester Vooravond or “Saint Sylvester’s Eve” to commemorate the death of St. Sylvester, who was pope during the turning point of the history of Christianity, immediately after the Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan.
There is very little reliable information about Pope Sylvester, but many legends exist. According to medieval oral tradition, St. Sylvester cured Emperor Constantine of leprosy with baptismal water. In gratitude for the healing, the emperor walked before Sylvester’s horse like a servant, leading his horse by the reins. According to some legends, he even offered the imperial crown to St. Sylvester, but he refused, returning the crown to Constantine.
In Belgium, Saint Sylvester’s Eve is celebrated with family parties, called réveillons in the French speaking areas. Similar the our celebrations in the United States, Belgian traditions include stand-up comedian reviewing the past year, kisses at midnight, exchanges of good luck greetings, and toasts the New Year and absent relatives and friends.
We hope you can join us to ring in 2017! For special accommodations or questions, feel free to email us at info@sugarcreekbrewing.com
