Tryon Street, from the Mint Museum up to Discovery Place, is going to be transformed by eight mini-parks for just one day, PARK(ing) Day, Friday, September 19th, 2014. Read more about this event:
PARK(ing) Day is an annual daylong global event where citizens collaborate to temporarily transform on-street parking spaces into PARK(ing) spaces – temporary public parks. The project began in 2005 when Rebar (a design firm in San Francisco) converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in an area of San Francisco that is underserved by public open space.
This year is going to be Charlotte’s biggest participation. There will be 8 mini-parks, or parklets, on Tryon Street, sprinkled from the Mint Museum up to Discovery Place. The parks will be open from 10am – 6pm or later. The public will be able to vote on their favorite park through text voting. Teams will also be building Little Free Libraries to be donated to surrounding neighborhoods the next day. Each park will be designed by a different team.
