Congratulations to the winners: Jo Ann Pabst, Michaele Harlow and Michelle McGuire! But remember, everyone can get a discount on opening weekend!
Birds of a Feather, which Queen City Theatre Company presents from November 5th, 2015, through November 14th at Spirit Square’s Duke Energy Theatre, won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Play in 2012. It’s based on a true story. Remember the two gay penguins in the Central Park Zoo who were the center of controversy? They adopted an egg and raised a chick together. Then a children’s book, “And Tango Makes Three,” was written about them…and widely banned. This comedy tells their story, as well as that of a pair of hawks that became news when they nested in a co-op on Fifth Avenue and threw bones and gristle out at the rich people below.
Queen City Theatre Company is offering three Charlotte on the Cheap readers two tickets each, for opening weekend, November 5th – November 7th. To enter the contest, leave a comment to this post with the following two bits of information:
- Your real name. The contest will end Tuesday, November 3rd, and you’ll be notified by email. If you don’t leave your full name, you can’t win, because need to know what name to leave at the box office.
- All the dates during opening weekend you can attend. The dates are Thursday, November 5th, Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7th. You will be entered for each of the dates you include. So the greater your availability, the greater your chances of winning.
A valid entry might look like this: “Pete Mustard can attend on the 5th or 7th.”
An invalid entry might look like this: “Charlotte on the Cheap is the greatest website ever!” (But thank you.)
Even if you’re not one of the three winners, you are still a winner. All Charlotte on the Cheap readers get 20% off tickets to opening weekend. Use this link, or use the promo code QCTC1CP at CarolinaTix.
The award winning comedy Birds of a Feather, by Marc Acito, arrives to Charlotte based on the true story of the nationwide controversy caused by gay penguins in the Central Park Zoo. The hysterical play tells the story of the two gay chinstrap penguins Roy and Silo who partnered, adopted and egg, hatched and raised a chick together in the heart of the Big Apple. In 2005 they were the subject of the widely banned children’s book “And Tango Makes Three”, pulled from schools and libraries bookshelves becoming one of the most banned books in the U.S.
Together with Roy and Silo, Bird of a Feather weaves the story of Pale Male and Lola, also based on real events, a pair of rare hawks who nested on Fifth Avenue co-op and became news when they raised their own family and threw bones and gristle out at the rich people below.
Come meet the four birds that quickly became news and world-wide sensations inspiring crazy bird brained behavior in the humans their story touches. Together with an outrageous parade of characters that include Paula Zahn, Richard Cohen, an eccentric birder and a traditional zookeeper, the show promises not to disappoint Charlotte audiences. Their book may have been banned, but Roy and Silo will make you laugh out loud while highlighting that any type of family that works should be celebrated, conventional or not, gay or straight. It’s only natural, right?
